The story behind AQUALEX
Why buy water in bottles, when drinking water comes out of the tap? This idea inspired CEO Alexander Vanlerberghe to start up AQUALEX in 2010. He found that everyone is willing to drink tap water, but sometimes it has an after-taste. It doesn't always smell great either. That is why many people still drink bottled water.
It’s a simple idea.
So Alexander wondered: what if you could filter out the foreign flavours, odours and substances? Then it would taste as good as spring water. And what if you could also make the tap an eye-catcher that fits perfectly within your interior? Then you would definitely give up bottled water, wouldn’t you? These systems are good for your health too, because you drink more water when it is always available.
Alexander's wife Niki, who now also works at AQUALEX as CFO, explains enthusiastically: ‘Once you have got one of these taps in your home, you won't want to do without it. When we were travelling recently, we noticed again how many bottles you actually have in your refrigerator - and how many you throw away.’
The world's first tap with five different types of water.
The AQUALEX philosophy is catching on. AQUALEX products and the AQUALEX service are popular too. At first AQUALEX distributed its drinking water systems to companies. Soon customers were asking us, ‘do you have something similar that can be built in at home?’. The answer was a kitchen tap that supplies five different types of water: cold and ambient drinking water, still and sparkling drinking water and boiling water. In 2013 this became the first tap in the world that could do this.
Expanded range, increased popularity.
AQUALEX expanded its range, creating designer taps for all kinds of kitchens and interiors, and developing new and ingenious solutions for homes, offices, public buildings and hospitals.
‘Individuals, businesses and health care institutions are all becoming increasingly aware of the convenience our systems can offer’, Alexander explains. ‘They no longer have to carry bottles around, they always have fresh filtered water and they are doing their bit for the environment too’, he concludes.
AQUALEX is currently operating over 22,000 drinking water systems and drinking water taps in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and other countries - and dozens more are being added every day.
Successful to the core.
In just ten years, AQUALEX has grown into a keen, enthusiastic team of more than 100 people. Since 2017 it has already received seven Trends Gazelle nominations, which recognise businesses with high added value. AQUALEX also received the Best Managed Company award in 2024.
