Englebert van Anderlecht - Peinture Bleue no101
- oil on canvas
- 129.8x 101.9cm / Painted in 1960.
Born in Brussels in 1918, Englebert van Anderlecht is considered one of the most significant Belgian abstract painters from the post-war period. From the 1950s until his untimely death in 1961, the artist committed himself to expressive, bold painterly representations of deep passion and primal emotion. The resulting compositions that went on to define his short but prolific artistic oeuvre are riotous, dramatic outpourings of vibrant colour that, as poet and art critic Jean Dypréau once famously wrote, ‘the frame of the painting contains with great difficulty’ (quoted in Michel Seuphor, La peinture abstraite en Flandre, Brussels, 1963, p. 242). In the present work, broad rhythmic brushstrokes depict swathes of vivid blue tones, from luminous cobalt to deep, rich indigo, the energy and sensitivity of the artist’s hand ever-present within its animated surface. Just after his passing, he was posthumously awarded the Olivetti prize, and has since been the subject of several important museum exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels (1990).
