Hilde Deceuninck - Arena

Hilde Deceuninck ( Roeselare 1958) creates artworks that span a broad spectrum between figurative and abstract art. Her work is an exploration of shapes, colors and textures, resulting in pieces that are both visually intriguing and emotionally resonant. This versatility makes her art accessible to a wide audience and ensures that there is something for everyone.

For AQUALEX, she crafted our ARENA IV, 2024

A striking combination of opposites, united in the same goal of watering. One object, the Arena, is stately, massive, imperial - you go for an audience, so to speak, to tap water. The garden hose, on the other hand, is flexible, mobile and extremely obliging - it moves itself to water thirsty plants and flowers. They also contrast aesthetically: the Arena is a refined design object; the 125-meter-long garden hose a banal and used tool for sale in any DIY store.

The form and name of the decorative material - “garden hose” - arouse ambiguity. For for what purpose does the garden hose wrap the Arena? To hug it? To provide an extra layer of protection? Or does the garden snake imagine itself to be an anaconda and attempt to smother the Arena?

It may surprise you, but the garden hose is not a modern invention; more than 2,400 years ago, the Greeks were already using it. To do so, they extracted the intestines from oxen, both the intestines and the stomach attached to them, with the latter acting as a pump. Those ancient water hoses then served not to water gardens and fields, but to combat one of nature's most destructive forces, fire.
