Marco De Sanctis

Marco De Sanctis (b. 1983, Milan) lives and works in Brussels and Italy. Marco De Sanctis literally and figuratively introduces a time dynamic into his work.

Since 2013, the artist has been re-examining the artistic theme of seascapes, much admired in the 17th and 19th centuries. Starting from a representational approach to this genre, the artist recontextualises it within a modern perspective. The anonymous seascapes come from different markets. The artist's intervention is both profound and irreversible; using the technique of erasure, Marco De Sanctis reclaims part of the artwork, leaving only the sky or the sea as visible elements. This process reclaims the history of the painting, renews its interpretation and offers a wider viewpoint. The viewer is presented with a fragmented encounter that simultaneously highlights the inexhaustible essence of the artwork and accentuates its continuity through time.
