Randoald Sabbe - Rain-Drain-Brain, 2024

Can a hat be a vessel? Does the rain give meaning? Sense of refreshment? To refreshment? To lessons? To new and clean and nourished? With Randoald Sabbe, one flows naturally to the other: rain-drain-brain. You move one element or add another and the rain penetrates deep into your brain. No more necessary part of your body in need of a reset, a wash, a rinse. The archaic bowler hat, a personal grandfather's legacy, is here the carrier for a transference. What is intended as protection is intervened without blinking. Just as Magritte passed the torch to Broodthaers with the bowler hat, Randoald Sabbe gives a new passage to our thoughts. A brain flushed by a rain of new images.

In Randoald Sabbe's work, history, politics, religion, semantics and their impermanence always come to the fore. For him, nothing is what it appears to be at first glance, but at the same time it is. He feels the constant urge to refresh our memory and ensure that nothing is lost.

Randoald Sabbe connects word and image to fan emotions and ideas. His artworks act as frames for thoughts, creating both self-portraits and a refuge for the viewer. Words are applied thickly so that they form relief and create distance. Their meanings are not singular and make the image abstract. The work is but the work and is only an intermediate stage. The way Randoald Sabbe captures and shapes thoughts not only offers a glimpse into his inner world, but also creates a space in which the viewer can recognize himself and find insight.
